Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis

Shaw Cancer Center now offers Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) for patients who want a safe, non-invasive approach to improving joint comfort and staying active. LDRT is a non-surgical option that treats painful arthritis, improves mobility, and allows you to return to an active lifestyle.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is common and can make everyday activities difficult. Many people find relief with physical therapy, medications, injections, or exercise. When symptoms continue despite these treatments, Low-Dose Radiation Therapy may be another option to help manage pain and inflammation.

If you’re interested in learning whether Low-Dose Radiation Therapy is right for you, we’re here to help. Call our team at the Shaw Cancer Center at (970) 569-7600.

What is Low-Dose Radiation Therapy?

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) uses a very small dose of radiation directed at the affected joint to calm inflammation. A course of treatment is typically 6 treatments delivered every other day. Each treatment delivers a very low dose of radiation. Many patients notice improvement in days. Clinical studies report that about 80 percent experience meaningful pain relief or better mobility.

By receiving low dose radiation there is no exclusion to do surgery at a later time.

Is LDRT Appropriate For You?

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy may be appropriate if you:
  • Are over the age of 60
  • Want to delay a surgical procedure
  • Have OA in the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, knees, hips, shoulders, or elbows that has not improved enough with medications, physical therapy, or injections
  • Are not a surgical candidate at this time due to other medical conditions
  • Want to reduce reliance on frequent medications
  • Are seeking a non-invasive treatment with minimal side effects
Our team can review your symptoms and imaging to help determine whether LDRT is a good fit for your specific situation.

What Treatment Involves

LDRT is delivered through six short sessions over two weeks.
  • Each visit lasts about 15 minutes
  • No medication, anesthesia, or recovery time
  • You may drive yourself to and from each appointment
  • Most patients continue normal activities right away
  • Medicare and commercial insurance pays for it
  • Self-referrals are accepted
As inflammation decreases, comfort and mobility often improve.
